About This Tool

A Swimming Pace Calculator helps swimmers determine how long they swim per distance. It determines the average minutes and seconds every 100 meters or 100 yards by taking hours, minutes, and seconds of constant swimming, or using a specific set of measurements.

Swimming pace calculators benefit the lifestyles of beginner swimmers, fitness enthusiasts, triathletes, and swimmers seeking to improve their performance in the pool or open water.

What is swimming pace?

Swimming pace, especially swimming pace per 100 meters or yards, is typically expressed in terms of minutes and seconds.

For example, if you swim a 500-meter race, you should be able to pace your 2:00 per 100-meter swimming time for the first 500 meters.

By calculating your swimming pace, you can monitor improvement, plan your future training schedules, and set performance goals for your swimming career.

How to Use a Swimming Pace Calculator

To use the swimming pace calculator in the previous section, here are a few instructions:

1. Enter the distance swum: Enter the length of water you have just swum.

This can either be done in meters or yards, depending on the swimming calculator you are using.

2. Enter the time: Enter the hours, minutes, and seconds of your total time spent in the water, whether it is in open water or the swimming pool.

3. Enter the distance units: You can choose between meters and yards here.

Make sure your swimming distance, and desired outcome are both in the same distance category.

4. Get your swimming pace rate: Press and calculate your desired outcome.

5. Analyze: Use your calculated swimming pace for future analysis.

For accurate results, use the same distance units each time you use a pace calculator and do it under similar environmental conditions.

Swimming Pace Calculator Formula

First and foremost is the standard swimming pace calculator formula.

You get your total time in seconds by dividing it over the total swimming distance in either meters or yards.

Then, you multiply that swimming pace value by one of your desired standard pace lengths, which can also be either meters or yards.

The formula can be expressed as either the swimming pace, expressed in seconds, divided by 60 gets you the minute value.

Pace 100m = (Total time in seconds / Total distance in meters) 100

Pace 100yd = (Total time in seconds / Total distance in yards) 100

We have already done the seconds to minutes conversion for you!

Alternatively, since speed equals distance over time, you can calculate your average swimming speed.

An alternative version of the above formula would be pace = speed.

An example would be useful here.

Swimming Pace Calculator Example

Let’s say you swam a 800-meter race in 16 mins.

Your total distance would be 800 meters and your total time would be 16 minutes or 960 seconds.

Your equation should be as follows:

Pace per 100m = (960s / 800m) 100

Pace per 100 m = 120 seconds

Dividing 120 seconds by 60 gets us the minutes, which in this case 120 seconds is equivalent to 2 minutes. Hence pace per 100m is 2:00.

So your average swimming pace is 2:00/100m. That means you can do 1,500 meters in about 30 minutes at the same pace.

Understanding your results

Now here is what each of your results means: 1

  • When you swim faster: Less time per 100 meters or yards
  • When you swim slower: More time per 100 meters, or yards
  • Doing the same pace workouts: Similar or the same 100 meters, or 100 yard pace
  • When you are not doing the same pace: Varying results

Instead of comparing your results to others, compare to your prior results.

Swimming is subjective to the ability and experience of the swimmer.

Things such as strokes, age, fitness level, and goals differ from one swimmer to another.

Additionally, swimming pace and swimming speed are different, so make sure you are clear which one you are calculating.

What are the factors that could affect swimming pace?

Some influencing variables on your swimming pace may vary under these categories: Technique, Fitness, Strokes, Length of the pool, Open water vs pool, fatigue, equipment

Swimming Pace Calculator Benefits and Use Cases

The benefit of a swimming pace calculator is it helps you establish the baseline, set goals, and measure improvement.

Swimming coaches can devise training programs that consist of intervals, and competitive athletes could calculate their race readiness or measure their performance. Triathletes can use pace calculators to roughly gauge swim leg completion, and recreational swimmers can determine how much they could get done in a swimming session depending on time. By knowing how to calculate swimming pace, one can know how many laps a 1,500-meter training session would get them. Monitoring swimming paces can help measure progression from training, and a combination with perceived exertion and a swimmer readiness questionnaire allows for a great assessment of your athletic ability. Additionally, training schedules could be planned using a swimming pace calculator and it also makes it easier to set specific goals.

Assumptions, Accuracy, Limitations, and Variables

The swimming pace calculator gives an estimate for the average. By entering in just the distance and time of your swimming session, the accuracy of the calculator relies on the variable of time being accurate.

Since it is not as easy to monitor time while swimming without the help of a stopwatch or smartphone, the assumption relies on an average of someone keeping fairly steady pace throughout the entire swimming session.

It does not account for the variable of distance travelled if not in the swimming pool because waves in open water create resistance. Similarly, the length of the pool may also be a variable of distance travelled if the swimmers are racing side-by-side.

Any modifications to speed, direction, and distance may all contribute to inaccuracies on a swimming pace calculator.

Finally, note that the swim paces rely only on the length of time expressed in hours: minutes, and seconds.

For example, if you swam a few hundred meters in a swimming pool, the swimming pace is the average of how fast you swam.

You could argue it is not an accurate measure of technique or ability because it is an average. However, it is good practice to do time trials in the pool and keep track of swimming interval training.

FAQs

What is a swimming pace calculator?

A swimming pace calculator is used to estimate your pace per distance by calculating your time spent swimming over distance swum.

How do I calculate my swimming pace?

Calculate your swimming time by dividing your total time in seconds to your distance in millimeters and multiply that value by 100.

What does pace 2:00 per 100m mean? 2

2:00 pace per 100m means, on average, you can swim 100 meters in 2 minutes.

Does swimming pace calculator depend on units?

Yes and No. You can calculate swimming pace in either meters or yards but meters are standard elsewhere while yards are popular amongst swimmers in the United States.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time over distance and speed is distance over time.

Can I use a swimming pace calculator for open water swims?

Yes! Just make sure to enter your open water swimming distance and total time spent in the water.

Can I improve my swimming pace?

Yes. You can improve your open water or pool swimming pace by enhancing your technique, increasing your aerobic capacity through endurance training, interval training and by using a consistent and disciplined training schedule.
